The gap between

Sister didn’t see the gap between

She was sitting near the window

Among the violets, pots matched by row

She said: the sunny days will keep

Mother didn’t see the gap between

She was talking over tea

Voice a-lilting, warmed by the steam

She said: smile, and the world smiles too

Lover didn’t see the gap between

He was exploring worlds through keys

Looking back as he moved on with ease

He said: learn, and go forth boldly

Father didn’t see the gap between

He was working the longest hours

Brushing off fog, ice, and showers

He said: be thankful for your living

Cousin didn’t see the gap between

She was making the morning coffee

Getting dressed in sunshine and beauty

She said: there are senseless regrets

You didn’t see the gap between

And you’ve passed out of reach

If I could speak, the gaps between

My letters would fall out to read

Come closer: the sunny days won’t keep
